Tips for Using and Maintaining the Right Towels for You

Finding the right toiletries for your needs can be a drag. There are so many options on the market that it’s easy to get analysis paralysis. If you find yourself wandering around your local department store trying to find a good towel, we’ve got you covered. Below, we’ll provide a short list of tips for using and maintaining the right towels for your needs. Check out what we have to say below.

Hand Towels

We use and discard hand towels without thinking. These are the towels we use most frequently. Though many opt for the monochromatic look, these towels come in various colors and patterns. As the name implies, you’ll typically use them to dry your hands after washing them, washing dishes, or cooking. Therefore, you should buy only soft ones. Additionally, purchase a towel that’s higher quality. You’ll use these often, and a cheap version will begin to fray with repeated use or deteriorate quickly—especially in the washing machine. Whatever towels you buy, learn how to care for them and keep them from losing their color.

Face Towels

Generally, face towels are the smallest of the bunch, and most people don’t use them as often as hand towels. Nonetheless, you should still replace them often since your facial skin is more prone to irritation and acne—even more so than the skin on your hands. It can house many bacteria, so ensure you clean it regularly since a dirty towel can worsen sensitive and acne-prone skin. If you have sensitive skin, it might be useful to use white hand towels because colored ones tend to have harsh chemicals. This is the best way to use and maintain the right towel for your needs.

Bath Towels

Bath towels are the ones you use after bathing and can range in size from standard bath towels to larger bath sheets. They’re  both typically large and useful for drying your entire body. However, they’re prone to accumulating bacteria and gunk after your shower. Because of this, you must wash it relatively often.

However, be careful of how you wash it. For instance, it wouldn’t be wise to put a white towel in with other colors or rough materials like jeans, or you might find that the fabric frays or its colors bleed. You also want to air-dry towels or dry them on low heat since high heat can ruin the fibers.

Now that you know the differences between various towels and how to best maintain them, you’ll be well on your way to finding the right towel.

I have always justified my preference for fine bed linens by considering the percentage of ones life spent between them.

And though I have never slept on D. Porthaults sheets, they remain on my list of wanna-trys. And who wouldnt want to luxuriate on fine, hand-finished sheets that start at around $1100 for a king set with two shams?

Celebrities, royalty and business barons happily shell out $4600 for a king set of D. Porthaults colorful silky sheets or even more for the cherished Trousseau Lace set. The Porthault line doesnt end in the boudoir or bedroom, either. Jackie Kennedy loved their linens and treasured their tablecloths and napkins (pictured at right).

Though not well-known outside the carriage trade, Porthault linens have been crafted in France since the mid-1930s. Late last year and as reported by Business Week Online, Porthault was acquired by Brazos Europe, a private equity firm based in Washington DC. These former associates of Texas zillionnaire Robert M. Bass have stepped out of the oil and land focus and have moved their sights to the luxury market, with major emphasis on all things French.

Two Brazos principals, Bernard J. Carl and Shannon Fairbanks, are reported to be spending around $25 million to acquire and grow this top-shelf linen crafter and intend to acquire other French artisanal firms as well. The reason for the luxury buying binge has much to do with the globally expanding market for luxurious goods and a global love of Euro luxury.

Finally, it may surprise some that Porthault bottom sheets, in the European tradition, are flat. No fitted sheets yet.
